Electro pop UK outfit Heads We Dance (HWD) have released their stellar hit 'Take My Picture' on your favorite Digital outlets as well as a fantastic video featured on Youtube having 3,375 views so far. We gave them a quick Q n A session as they lay down some answers to both the video and accompanying single which will have some dance remixes from some handpicked talent.
So your new single 'Take My Picture' is out now, but I want to ask about the video because its well directed and beautifully shot. Who directed the video and what was the theme or inspiration behind it?
The video was directed by Robert (Bobby) Dee. He got in touch with us when we released our debut album Love Technology saying that he was a fan of the band and would like to work with us. Bobby loved ‘Take My Picture’ and sent us a great treatment which brought out the dark elements of the lyrics, while also working with the pop style of the track. The video was inspired by classic voyeuristic films like Blow Up; you’d have to speak to Bobby to find out more about it though as it was his concept! We love working with people like Bobby who put their own spin on our music.
I take it that Bex (the lead vocalist in Heads We Dance) doesn't acknowledge the fact that Pete is somewhat stalking her but appears invisible throughout the whole video. Elaborate on that moment in the video if you can please?
The idea of the video was that Bex plays a wannabe star who initially appears to be the submissive prey of an elusive paparazzi photographer (me). As the video progresses you realise that Bex is in fact leading me into a trap. Bobby suggested using mirrors as a simple but striking visual theme for the video, but mirrors also work with the ‘Take My Picture’ lyrics which are about fame, vanity, and all the stuff that goes with that.
The song itself has some great lyrical moments (such as "you can quote me/talk is cheap/I am what you see") and it has an irony behind it, like its encouraging photogenic tendencies and I guess unwanted attention. Tell us how you came about writing 'Take my Picture?' Is there a clear cut conveyed message or theme behind the song?
We wanted to write a song which, on the face of it, was just a great, upbeat club/pop track. It was really a priority that it worked on that level. We then wanted to add some more substance to the track via the lyrics. We decided to make ‘Take My Picture’ about the power relationship between celebrity and the press; it’s a two way thing which is similar to a romantic relationship. We thought it would then be cool to personify that as a duet between Bex and I. We love pop music which is exciting and melodic but with depth – hopefully we’ve achieved that with ‘Take My Picture’!
Now with the new single out and a fantastic video to boot, you’ve roped in some remix talent from around the globe. Who is on the remix end of "Take my Picture" and what can you briefly tell us about the remixes?
We’re really lucky to have ‘Take My Picture’ remixed by some of our favourite up-and-coming dance producers: Justin Faust, B-Xentric, the Amplid, Radiocontrol and Coin Operated Boy. The other track on the single, ‘After Dark’, was remixed too by Ghosts of Venice who are based in Leeds, like us.
The single is out; we absolutely love it madly here at Nerdy Frames HQ, where can readers en masse (especially our New Zealand readers) grab their copy of "Take My Picture?"
