You may remember this band with their award winning vial video ‘Here it goes Again’ in which they used treadmills in sync with their dancing, oh and also it’s a very catchy tune I might add. In fact this is how they were recognized as their video eventuated 49 million views on Youtube and it’s a staple in the vial video searches studies.
Now I really don’t know how to categorize their music, I mean Wikipedia has them as a ‘Alternative Rock/Punk Pop’ band, but when ‘Here it goes Again’ was on MTV, I honestly thought they were a rip off to The Presidents of the United States of America (PUSA) but that’s just in theory. When I got ‘Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky’ their my comparisons shifted from PUSA to Dandy Warhols which to their detriment is probably a good thing.
I was thinking ‘Oh Christ I’m gonna hate this as much as I hate everything which is 30 Seconds to Mars’ and surprisingly, it turned a cheek.
There is less fun injected into this release and more focus on good song composition as far as I’m concerned. I mean let’s put this into perspective, when you get CDs from majors like EMI you’re expected to either have a love or a hate opinion towards it because of its association, but this release is fantastic.
Yes I’m willing to stake my reputation on it because here I am thinking ‘Well they really want to be taken seriously, no bullshitting here.’ Yeah of course there are moments of silliness within their lick of power pop, but you’ll be okay (no pun intended).
Now for the moments:
‘This Too Shall Pass’ plays melodically like it would with some beautiful pianos, raw drumming and some echoing vocals, and I would like to stress that out that there will be moments when the vocals take an adventurous dive into different subtleties.
‘Needing/Getting’ is pure unrelenting pop power surge with some frisky guitars and a bridge that sounds like it’s breaking into an impromptu Irish ditty. Does remind me of that terrible band Fall Out Boy only making sense!
‘White Knuckles’ comes off with a pseudo style Nu Wave canticle that will make you boogie like a hipster and sweat like some hyper obese person with gout making this a person pick of mines.
‘End Love’ is strangely another pseudo style track. Okay are they raiding my Duran Duran greatest hits? It’s another good one and what I would consider an unintended dancefloor hit for all those hipsters smoking their last ciggie drag.
‘Back From Kathmandu’ dives into a more indie driven sound with a coffee hit of happiness without the guilt. It becomes a blooming flower of beatitude and bliss.
In conclusion, I really dug this release and I’m still surprised that the songs from Ok Go’s ‘Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky’ do hold a thread of seriousness and charm, but I do still miss the humor of the treadmills and synchronized dancing.
