Moments in Skullcandy TV

Its been almost six months that the lovely folks of Skull Candy decided to sponsor Auckland's notorious pop culture audio blog and aide us in our pure enjoyment of music by providing us with some of their stellar headphones from their range. I mean we could have not done it without their help because our busy bee writers are driven for the passion of music, but don't want to annoy the neighbors in the process.

But don't take our word for it....some of your favorite artists/producers/deejays and bands are Skullcandy followers too. Did you know Larry Tee was wearing a pair of blue SK pros in this press shot

So to thank our local Skullcandy outfit and to boost advertisement productivity we present a new weekly segment called:

“….if Debbie Harry joined Queens Of The Stone Age……sophisticated but still on the right side of salacious”

“…a sexy, dance-focused twist that pushes a familiar rock sound into new, exciting territory” CLASH 8/10

“..a more mature sound that is rife with killer hooks.” KERRANG!

“Siouxsie meets Queens Of The Stone Age on a bourbon bender” CLASSIC ROCK

Baptized By Fire’s juddering electro-rock features Dalle’s trademark Banshee war cry but – this time – melded with sweeter harmonic layers. The single is available on 7” vinyl – backed with Spinnerette’s cover of Devo’s ‘The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprise’ - and as a digital download from 13th July.

Guetta Produced The Black Eyed Peas Number 1 Selling Smash

And Current Top 10 Radio Hit “I Gotta Feeling”

Guetta’s New Album One Love To Be Released August 25

(New York, NY – July 7th, 2009) – International Artist/DJ/Producer David Guetta and pop-R&B superstar Kelly Rowland are set to perform their global hit “When Love Takes Over” for the first time on U.S. television this Thursday, July 9th on Fox’s ”So You Think You Can Dance.” The hit single from Guetta’s upcoming album One Love has become one of the songs of summer 2009 around the globe. Already hitting #1 in the UK, France and Ireland and #1 on the U.S. Billboard Dance Charts, “When Love Takes Over” is now climbing the Top 40 Radio Airplay chart where it is currently #32. “When Love Takes Over” isn’t Guetta’s only hit on the charts, he produced the Black Eyed Peas most recent single “I Gotta Feeling” which is the #1 selling single in the U.S. and is top ten at Top 40 radio. The sexy video for “When Love Takes Over” shot in Venice Beach, CA by famed director Jonas Akerlund is seeing airplay on Music Choice, BETJ, MTV Hits and Logo and has been streamed over 1.8 million times in just 3 weeks on Guetta’s official youtube channel.

Guetta’s upcoming fourth studio album, One Love, scheduled for August 25th release on Astralwerks, is an ambitious, ingeniously crafted album that sets forth nothing less than a bold and beautiful manifesto for the global pop and dance audience. Guetta’s unique blend of dance/electronic with contemporary urban flourishes is showcased throughout One Love with guest vocals by superstars Rowland, will.i.am, Akon, Estelle, break-out stars Kid Cudi, Novel, Wynter, Makeba and longtime collaborator Chris Willis. With killer vocals provided by each artist, Guetta serves up a body-rocking, all-embracing blend of hip-hop, soul and electro – an audacious fusion that's been sorely missed ever since rap and dance audiences became polarized at the turn of the 1990s. With a global following of nearly five million celebrants at over 200 DJ performances just last year attesting to his musical authority, it’s no wonder that Guetta has emerged as a catalyst and a curator of an exciting new musical hybrid.

DAVID GUETTA’s name is synonymous with the world’s greatest house and dance music, and with the parties that bring that music to life. Since releasing his first pioneering single “Up 1 Way” in his native Paris, France in 1992, David Guetta has sold over 2 million albums worldwide and over 3.2 million singles. He has been France’s No. 1 club DJ for a decade, and was named the world’s No. 1 House DJ in 2008. Attesting to his global appeal, Guetta is also a bona-fide YouTube star, holding the record for “most watched” of any artist in the electronic music genre with over 32 million views of his 2007 classic “Love Is Gone”.

In Europe, Guetta has previously released three chart-topping albums (Just a Little More Love, 2002; Guetta Blaster, 2004; Pop Life, 2007). Guetta and his wife Cathy are also famed for staging the mega-sized dance parties, F*** Me I’m Famous, for tens of thousands of house, electro, and dance-loving fans from Ibiza to Miami, New York, London, Barcelona and Paris. They have released four best-selling compilation packages of the same name.

BIO:

Since the release of their first album, The Victorian English Gentlemens Club toured for too long, then locked themselves away. They wrote 100 songs, disposed of 88 humanely, and have now laid out the remaining dozen on a 3? silver platter, for your dirty soul to revel in.

Their previous opus was based on a severe lack of musical understanding. Their eponymous debut saw them groping their instruments like over-anxious teenagers, fast, furious and lots of fun. Their second is full of confidence and somewhat brutally, demands your respect.

'Love On An Oil Rig' takes triple distortion, the most obscure of harmonies and refracts them through the prism of pop. Where the first record wore its influences on its sleeve, this one stands alone. The stripped down primal ideas are defined and sharp, retaining their well-developed Art school sensibilities of the absurd, the outrageous and the other. Since the recording, a new drummer and fourth club member has been recruited to enhance the ferocity of their sound, taking the noise to the next level with offset guitars, shouts and wails.

The first album dealt with foetal burials, plastic windows and banning gin in 1840. The second features parrots, the primitiveness of modern life and sexual yearning on long distance lorry drives. It's hard not be intrigued by the titles alone: 'Love on An Oil Rig', 'Women Versus Children', and 'Periscope Envy'.

This is the sound of the purest voices, guitars, basses, drums, circular saws, churches, hands, boots, thoraxes and lungs, juxtaposed to an awkward perfection. The band do not and will not use keyboards, synthesisers or system three acrylic.

In the last two years they have performed in three forests, two churches and one circus. They still live in Cardiff. They collectively enjoy: effects pedals, Sonic Youth, bells, taxidermy seagulls, yellow mackintoshes, distortion, bonsai, black gaffer tape, bone and ivory dominoes and Wire.

'Love On An Oil Rig' was produced, mixed and engineered by Charlie Francis.

BENT release 'The Best Of', celebrating 10 years of exquisite productions....released July 20th 2009

‘The Best of…’

Label: Godlike and Electric

Release Date: 20th July 2009

Catalogue Number: GAE007

‘The Best Of Bent’ promises to be the retrospective album of the summer - Nail Holiday and Simon Mills, AKA Bent, are back with a highly anticipated best of collection, due for release on the 20th July. Spanning the career of one of the UK’s most influential artists – famous for hits such as Always, I Love My Man, Swollen, Magic Love and To Be Loved, it respectfully nods to their past, present and future – further proof why Bent remain not just important to the development of UK electronica, but to contemporary music altogether.

Celebrating 10 years and 4 critically acclaimed albums - the last being 2006’s mould breaking ‘Intercept’ - Bent celebrate this musical milestone by including a second CD of new un released material which the band have been working on to give a taster of whats to come when they begin work on their fifth studio album in January 2010 - a new vision for the scene that the band were pivotal in shaping. Their ethereal, and poignant sound has been likened to Air, Moby and even Badly Drawn Boy. Alongside these artists, Bent remain a discerning choice for music aficionados everywhere. From the beautiful, mellow tones of Magic Love and Always to the Balearic, 4-4 funk of ‘Comin’ Back’ and the synth-laden harmonies of Leavin’ Me, The Best of Bent promises fans – new and old – an unforgettable sonic journey.

The influence of Bent’s work has garnered praise from the likes of NME, DJ, Jockey Slut and Mixmag, who all praised their intricate, all-encompassing sound and sampledelic genius, celebrating Bent’s ethos of taking obscure recorded gems and extracting exceptional sounds. Their unique musical blueprint was first laid down on their masterpiece debut ‘Programmed to Love’, which subsequently sold66,000 copies in Europe within the first week of release, laying the foundations for more widespread critical acclaim -

“Programmed To Love' … builds genuinely beautiful music out of whatever Bent have scavenged. There's a thin line between clever and ironic, of course, but much here tends towards elegance rather than car-boot-crazed wackiness”. – NME, 2000.

Bent have created the ground work for some amazing and beautifully crafted remixes, most notably Ashley Beedle’s massiveMahavishnu remix of ‘Always’, Francois K’s vocal mix of ‘Swollen’ and a sublime mix from Serge Santiago. In addition, Bent in their own right sprinkled a little of their own remix magic on to tracks by Faithless (‘Reasons’), Morcheeba (World Looking In), Matthew Jay (‘Please Don’t Send Me Away’), Hall and Oates (‘I Can’t Go for That’) and even Dolly Parton (‘Early Morning Breeze’).

Nail Tolliday and Simon Mills conceptualised Bent in Nottingham in 1997 after becoming disillusioned with the state of dance music at the time. 1999 saw the band release debut album ‘Programmed For Love’, to critical acclaim and received groundbreaking response and praise. Since then, the Bent machine created three further albums, ‘Everlasting Blink’(2002), ‘Ariel’s’ (2004) and ‘Intercept’, all selling in excess of over 350,000 copies.

Since the release of Intercept, Nail has been working on his Goose Fair Island album, whilst Simon has been behind the boards with Lenny Annex.

This album keenly displays Bents huge musical depth, serving as authentication of the scope and breadth of Bents musical legacy. To prime the release of the Best Of, Bent will be performing a special ONE OFF show to coincide with the albums release on July 22nd, a welcome return to the stage and their first live UK gig since closing The Big Chill Festival in 2006

KillaQueenz-Sistarhood

By Conan The Destroyhhher

Do you feel that Hip Hop is by and large still male dominated today? Ever miss the days of Nikki D, MC Lyte, Monnie Love or even.....Queen Latifah before she became an annoying Hollywood actress? Females in today’s Hip Hop world are still treated like second class citizens, but KillaQueenz however…...set the status quo ablaze

Encompassing some of the old school female masters from the past with an emphasis on some contemporary productions and now sounds of today, KillaQueenz are ready to blaze the fuck out of all the males MC’s out there with their new album ‘Sistarhood.’ You get a tag team dose of real female girl power with excellent hooks, good rhythms and flow delivery that would kick the plastic out of Lil Kim’s augmented breasts.

KillaQueenz has that lovely old style of word flow that harkens back to early to mid 90s female rappers as mentioned early, which is not a supposed snub, but a compliment because unlike most mouthwash that passes itself off as female hip hop, KillaQueenz keep it “real”….unquote

‘Welcome’ fires off the album to a promising start stinging the hell out of the listener with their female wit and charisma!

‘Bitches’…….I love this fucking track, especially with the tagline of ‘Bitches don’t, bitches don’t bitches don’t like me’, which is like the kick in the nuts or v-jay jay as the title implies.

‘Pull up a Chair’ (featuring RU.C.L.) has some awesome percussion rolls with some deadly tongued rhymes, almost whimsical and fun like parody piss take to a Brady Bunch theme tune.

‘Sweaty Wet’ is an accessible dance tune which works tremendously. The beat sounds dangerously like an Eminem/Dr.Dre produced beat but clocked within a dance-able tempo.

‘Double Up’ featuring The South Rakkas Crew clocks up another one for dancefloor and dancehall fans with Chann toasting it up to the 132 Bpms!

‘Break The Rules’ takes the Missy Elliot route with the rhymes spitting a tad faster than usual, but done in a clever way that flows with astute consistency.

Bundled with the album is a series of bonus remixes which are DJ friendly to spin and enjoy at each person’s own leisure. Overall this album is fantastic and not bad from the lovely ladies of KillaQueenz who can show the anal male dominated Hip Hop world a thing or two about real rapping!

I would put them equally in the same light as New York’s own Yo Majesty having similar ideas and concepts, but of course done geographically different.

The Bloody finger muppets!

By Conan the Destroyhhher

Well judging by that oblivious grimace on my face, I didn't have a good time at The Bloody Beetroots gig even though Nerdy Frames did give 100% into promoting it from our beloved blog of terror!

What went wrong?......the usual nuances. I almost went deaf when the soundsystem was sooo loud, I couldn't hear anything properly through my cans which resulted to messy mixing from my end. Also I was on at the same time when the Beetroots were on which in turn meant empty dancefloor for my ass. I did have the usual pissed yobbos dancing in front of me as well as a slue of stupid bimbos leafing through my CD wallet and going 'Can you play this?', but other than that.....nothing happy to report, plus I missed the Bloody Beetroots as a result!!!@!

Now I'm not trying to be ungrateful or anything....but I just wanted to end on the night with something happy. As each passing day goes, I'm questioning whether I should go on Djing....but you know what, you learn from things like this!

However I'm not going to give up....I'm not out for the count! I can play with the best of them, so promoters...be afraid, be very afraid!

Oh and most of the outer parameter of Studio in regards of the Djs playing......you guys played some boring shit.

Please!!!!!!!!!

Let's make fun of some of Auckland's yooful Generation-Y. Oh I couldn't score any tail because half the ladies at the BB gig look like they were 16 years or younger.....dang!

Oh and to the bitch that told me to stop playing hard house.....it was jungle you AIDS infested vagina! Beside the fucking floor was empty.........so I thought fuck it, who cares!

Alan Braxe: The Interview

By Conan the Destroyhhher

Alan Braxe will no doubt be one of those names that will echo through the ages for a very long time to come. In fact he has bared witness to all of French Dance music since the very beginning especially when he was associated with one half of the power duo of Daft Punk; Thomas Bangalter!

In fact I would like to thank him, Thomas Bangalter and Benjamin Diamond for making the mid to late 90s something memorable for guys like me who grew up in that era after they released 'Music Sounds better with you' which became a number one hit across the world and to this day is still being played out at clubs everywhere around the world.

Today Alan is touring around the globe, producing original material, remixing for the likes of Goldfrapp, Kylie, and even Britney Spears plus running a successful record label called 'Vulture' all the while being a family man whilst relaxing away from the heyday and stress of music which he makes a good living from!

We talk to Alan about the classics, the Cello and what kit he uses in everyday music as well as some lovely name dropping from the man himself!

Hey Alan, thanks for talking to us at Nerdy Frames. Now from what I read about you Alan, you have trained in traditional instruments such as the Cello (for ten years) bass guitar & clarinet for a few years, did all that training in classical instruments help in someway formulate your sound?

To formulate my sound I don't know. But for sure it opens the ears to the music field, especially when you learn instrument at a young age. The thing is that there is a huge difference between practicing Cello for example and Doing electronic music.

On one hand playing cello, you can focus 100% of your time on one instrument only, practicing again & again, improving the diverse techniques which are necessary to deliver the right emotion.

On the other hand electronic music implies to deal with a lot of equipment, from musical instrument, to producing gear, like FX compressors mixer etc. It's totally another approach of music. It's really multi task.

If I were to ask which one of the said instruments was the hardest to learn, what would it be?

Well Cello of course. This is an amazing instrument but the early years of the learning process are a bit difficult. You just have to deal with your left hand for the notes and right hand for the bow. Sounds very simple but it takes years before getting the right bow technique and being fluent with correct tune on the left hand at a fast speed. But it's fascinating because there is no escape it's just you playing good or bad.

What gear do you use to make your music? Do you still use analogue or have you gone and made the switch to digital as of recent?

A couple of years ago I have been trying to use the computer only, but I don't think it's the right set up for me. I love real instruments, analogue synth, hardware samplers, drum machines. To me there is something about the warmth of the sound that you can not match using plug-in’s only .Beside this I use Ableton as an audio recorder and a creative tool as well, there is so many interesting features in this program, it's amazing.

What music were you listening to when you were young? Were there any standout albums, artists, songs that you liken to?

Lots of music, my father was listening to Bach all the time and at the same time my brother who is 8 years older than me was listening to a lot of punk music from the U.K.

Around 14 years old I started to buy some hip hop and R n b. I remember Alexander O Neil’s "Fake" made me dreaming for such a long time.

At the same time I was listening to a lot of U.K music, bands like Heaven 17 or Wire. I have always been listening to lot of different styles of music without being fan of a specific artist. But by the late 80's early 90's I discovered Techno and house music from the U.S and the U.K and it changed everything, I started buying this type of music only.

Lots and lots of 12" inches, and going to cubs and raves a lot as well.

Were there any influences musically or otherwise that helped you to get where you are today?

(Thomas Bangalter)

Well there are two aspects, my musical background which is really wide and beside this, the people you meet and give you the will to enter the world of producing. I think Thomas Bangalter is really a key person. He showed me that it's possible to do tracks with just a few pieces of gear, but the condition is that you must have a very good knowledge of your equipment.

You’re known world over for your contribution in productions for the short lived side project Stardust which gave us the now Classic track ‘Music Sounds better with you’. How did ‘Music sounds better with you’ come about and what was the thought process at the time in the making of it?

By the end of 97, I have released my 1st track "Vertigo" on Roulé. Right after the released I’ve been invited to do a live performance at the Rex Club in Paris. I proposed Thomas Bangalter and Benjamin Diamond to join me on stage.

During the rehearsal we were searching for some musical idea and we found this loop from Chaka Kahn’s "fate" song. We did a kind of demo, played it on stage and we thought it would be good to work deeper on this song.

So we spent 1 week in Thomas's Studio working on the song. At the beginning there were much more vocal parts & lyrics but we were not happy with the arrangement so we started to delete some vocals keeping the key ones only, I think that this made the song very special. There is no chorus or verse clearly identifiable. Another key point in the song is the bass line, which is doing a modulation each 16 bars. I believe that it makes the magic in the track as it gives a strong support to the sample and vocals changing the background harmony.

Fabled video Director Michel Gondry directed the video clip for ‘Music Sounds better with you’. So was that really all 3 of you wearing metallic masks, and which one was you in the clip?

(Spot the Alan)

Yes it was Good fun. We went to L.A for the shooting of the video. It was 3 days of shooting. Yes it's us three wearing masks and playing on a cloud.

Did you ever think that ‘Music Sounds better with you’ would become a number 1 hit at the time?

When we recorded the song we had no idea that it would become a hit. But during the release, even at the early stage of promo, we realized that the track had a big impact on people, in Clubs and Radio.

Now I believe Alan that you have some relatives that are also in the music scene which I believe is one DJ Falcon and Quartet. Are you proud of their accomplishments in music?

Oh Yeah It's so great. I really love their music. It's amazing cause it's really a hazard we never said one day, ‘O.K let's do music’ we’ve followed a different path but at one point I think the Electronic Music caught us, really.

Another track that you’ve put out which became an instant classic was ‘Intro’ with Fred Falke. How was this track conceived, and vocal running through…it’s a sample isn’t it?

Yes it's a sample from the jets "Crush on you". The track was done in one day using the SP1200 and the bass played by Fred and sampled in an old Ensoniq ASR 10.It was a really fast recording. No questions, or doubt, everything went out very easily. Then we released the track on my label Vulture during the spring of 2000 and very quickly we sold a lot of copies. It was played everywhere at this time. The track is still selling now and still sounds good in clubs ... I love it.

Alan Braxe and Fred Falke!

Tell us about the ‘Rubicon’ if you can Alan. Was it meant to be a homage towards 80s synth bands?

Yes it was good fun recording this track with Fred. We were really in the 80's cliché and I think we got it right. The recording took one week; we had a really good time because everything came up naturally, however the technical set up was not easy. The song is full of arrangements and at this time there was no computer in my studio so everything was done through a hardware sequencer and it was a bit complicated to program everything but in the same time the track was sounding so 80's, So cliché , that we were laughing all time with Fred.

Do you its far too late for the music industry to try go back to what it was before?

I am trying not to think too much about these facts. Even if the music is being played on Mp3 I still do my best to produce as best as I can, working on warm sounds. And in any case, there is nothing I can do against the Mp3 format as an audio Standard.

Regarding the industry, yeah probably lots of things will change, but once again I don't want to think too much about this. My only feeling is that it's time to release music, time to move without over thinking things because the period is really creative and open. To me this fact is a real good news which make the balance with the lost of sales due illegal download.

Who are you feeling at the moment within the scene? Is there an artist or group or band that you recommend we look out for?

Yeah yeah definitely, a young Parisian Artist calling Breakbot. He has done some amazing remixes recently (the one for Metronomy is really great) he is so talented I really love his music.

Now you have your own label ‘Vulture’ which you use to release your own music on. Will there be more from Vulture in terms of new acts being signed or will it remain just your music for now?

I really want to develop the label. I would like to sign new acts and extend the musical field of the label. Last month I have released the 1st single of an English Band calling Fenech Soler which is more Electro Pop than house. I am really happy with this release, they have a song "the cult of romance"; it is so beautiful.

There have been some good reactions in the U.K press and radio. At the same time I want to keep up releasing electro and House tracks. My Aim would be to release one Single every 8 weeks.

I also see in your discography that you’ve done a lot of remixes, in particular mainstream pop acts like Britney Spears and Kylie. How do you approach remixes from the mainstream like the acts I’ve mentioned? Do they come to you?

Well In fact the Label's A&R is sending you a simple request. Regarding remixes, Most of the time there is a tight deadline so it's good pressure. It's a very interesting work specially when remixing songs which are not on the dance format. It gives you more room for creativity.

I have an original 12 inch of Goldfrapp’s single ‘Number One’ which I love the most and another one of those remixes you did with Fred Falke. Do you have a favourite remix that you had fun working on?

I think the one for Britney. I did the main mix in a week sent it to the label and they loved it. I was then really happy, and went straight back in the studio, did another mix in one night which is better than the 1st one I believe.

Now you’ve done a lot of traveling and Djed at a lot places around the world. What would be a typical Dj set with Alan Braxe and what’s your favourite country to play at?

Well my set is quite eclectic I like to play a lot of different stuff. It can goes from Old school French house to techno to electro Pop or even Hip Hop sometime. I think it's a great time now cause peoples in clubs are really open minded so you can play a lot of different styles.

What’s the future hold for you in regards to music?

Lots of good things I hope. But in any case I am already very happy with what I have. I really love this job on all its diverse aspects

Producing, Dj, running a label, it's such a great luck to do what I like. I am more than optimistic regarding the future, music is always moving to something new and it's really exciting to search in this direction.

How does Alan Braxe relax away from his work in music?

Well I have one kid and very soon the second will born, so as soon as I stop working its family time.

With that....we thank you Mr.Alan Braxe

Per QX-The Interview

By Conan the Destroyhhher

Per QX is one rising star on the dancefloor that y'all got to keep an ear out for this year. From the likes of Hoxton Whores to our favorite new queen of sexy and dirty, DJ CAT NYC, Per's remixes just have that extra touch of sleaze that only a Swede of his caliber can deliver!

Our friends over at Kinetika have signed him on their label, and yes it's another exclusive interview in collaboration with Kinetika Records!

We talk to Per QX about everything within his musical rainbow and a down n dirty party called 'Gutterslut'

Thanks once again to George over at Kinetika Music!

Hey Per QX thanks for taking time to talk to us at Nerdy Frames. Now you’re from Stockholm, Sweden but migrated to merry old U.K. 8 years ago. How are you finding the U.K. in terms of living, culture, etc etc?

I think the UK is great for Dance music because it has a huge club scene still, and because the UK have had it for so long. People are always looking for new sounds, especially in London where there is such a vibrant multi cultural mix of people.

I’ve been to a few places in the UK and I think south of Wales is amazing, there's a lot of nice country side in Britain. There's a few things I miss about Sweden, we are more environmental friendly there, and I miss the fresh air.

Name one or many things that you like about British culture? I like spotted dick and Steve Coogan, the British comedian.

I really like the dark British humor, There's nothing better than English comedy. I love Catherine Tate, Karen Taylor and I just checked out Youtube a few weeks ago to see some old episodes of Absolutely Fabulous and they still make me laugh.

Do you miss Sweden as much, and if so what makes ya homesick for Sweden?

I'm actually there a lot now. I'm working on a lot of music over there and I'm D’jing there as well. I just came back from Stockholm a few days ago and will be back again at the end of July. I really love it there in the summer, it's so amazing.

If there was a part of your Swede heritage that hasn’t rubbed off you during your move to the UK, what would that be

I think when I moved over I definitely became more trashy, even though now I'm such a health freak. The people in London can go out any day for a drink or be up a whole weekend without sleep, while in Stockholm people think you're weird if you are going out for a drink in the week, and with our hard drug police there's no way you can party till 8 in the morning.

Now we did an interview with Dada Life who is also from the motherland (of Stockholm, Sweden) and I must say that their music is a clear indication that Sweden has some of the best talented dance producers. So who do you rate from Swedish dance scene as the definitive movers and shakers to look for?

I love Dada Life, I think they are great, I don't know them but I play their mixes all the time. Stockholm Syndrome has a cool sound that mixes progressive with Nu Disco. Jesper Dahlback and his Brother John always know how to get the track right.

I really like Zoo Brazil as well, and Style of Eye

So tell us about yourself kind sir?

I moved over from Stockholm when I was 24, because the club scene was destroyed by something called the "Rave police". A few years before I moved over I started to produce music in a studio where Ace of Base did their first hits.

This dates back to 1999. The guy who owned the studio said that I could use the studio every night and in return he would get the publishing of my tracks that I produced. After half a year I signed my first track to Stonebridge’s label, and that really made me realize I could produce records myself.

How long have you had an interest in dance music, in particular producing and Djing?

I’ve been Djing since I was 12, put on my first rave party when I was 16 and been in bands since the age of 15. Dance music is my life, and I love a lot of different sounds and genres, and I think that you can hear that when I dj. I play house records with rave records.

How would you describe to our readers your sound?

My production sound is very melodic, clubby tech house and techno, music that makes you jump. Party records with a tougher edge. My dj style is a bit more genre mashing and crazy, I could never play one sound like techno or house it would really make me bored. (Meeee too!)

Tell us about what you grew up listening to when you were young?

I was growing up listening to my dads collection of Elvis Presley and the Beatles, but when I started to buy my 7'inches I was very into hip hop and hip house tracks that came out in 89-90. I also became a hip hop dance instructor from the age of 15 to 18 so Salt 'N' Pepa, De La soul, Public Enemy, Leila K were my idols at the time.

Are there any influences from either the past or present, music or otherwise that you look up to or admired?

I still think Armand Van Helden is still rockin' and he's been a big inspiration for me over the years. When I dj I always play quite a few tracks with rap similar to the hip house sounds from my Youth.

What were some of your favorite dance acts of 08 and what are your picks for 09?

I think John Acquaviva had some really strong tracks in 2008 and still keeps putting out techno anthems, and for big bass-lines I think Wolfgang Gartner and Miles Dyson is rockin. My friend Kid Massive is doing some killer house tunes. Zombie Disco Squad and Joachim Garraud are wicked as well.

Tell us your relationship with The Hoxton Whores? I’ve noticed that you’ve done a slue of co-producing for them over the years. Elaborate if you can.

Yes, I met Kevin and Gary from the Hoxton Whores when I came to London. I had 1 pound 50 pence left of my spending money and was just about to pack my bags and go back to Stockholm, when they signed me for a triple single deal. It was quite embarrassing because I cashed the cheque in some money exchange place in Piccadilly Circus half an hour after they wrote out the cheque.

So they got a call from the exchange place asking if they could identify me. I mean I was so broke I ate potatoes and butter for dinner.

I kept the contact with the Hoxton Whores over the years and I later started to engineer and c/o produce/write their records. So there's a few of the hits I'm involved in.

Now for our tech and gear enthusiasts out there, what do you use to produce your music or aid in your remixes on a day to day basis? Are you doing it digital, analogue or both?

I'm 100 % digital, and I love it. When I started to produce I was using a massive 32 channel mixing desk, Dat, A-dat and analog synths etc, but know I'm doing everything on my laptop. It's great I once started a remix of a D Ramirez track "Shield" on a plane over the Atlantic. Doing that 10 years ago would have sounded like a crazy thing to do.

I use Logic as my sequencer and I use lots of bit-crushing effects, I even have one on my main mix output. I tend to use a lot of stuff on my final mix to make it compact and punchy, and stereo effects on snares to make the mix wide.

Is there a live aspect to what you do, or is it mostly all about djing the music?

There's no real live aspect, but I think I'm an entertainer and I love to entertain. I always jump around in the DJ booth and read the crowd. I keep a of eye contact with the crowd, I think that the a to z if you want to become a Dj.

Who wants to see someone standing without any movement behind the decks, For me that's a big turn off.

Okay let’s talk about the music. What is the process involved when coming up with an idea for a track and do you also apply that logic when you do remix work?

Idea's I usually get when I'm out djing or listening to music in general. I sometimes start with a beat, and sometimes I start with a hook. I find sample cds very inspiring, for example my track Intensity on Joia Records uses a symphonic hook from and R 'n" B sample cd that I cut up and speed it up.

I had a world music sample cd that I used for drums in another track. For a remix I listen to the parts and decide what I should keep and build my mix of.

Would it be unfair to assume that the major of original tracks you’re done are all prog house?

I think genres work sometime, but for my music I have such a broad influence when I produce I think it's a mix of what I dj out all in one track. House, techno, electro, progressive and big room sounds and even a bit of rave.

I could never fit into one specific genre that would be so boring. When I ask my friends which genre a new track that i‘ve just done would fit in, they all say different things.

I love the track you remixed for Princess Superstar called Rock U. Explain to us how you got to remix it and what you did different from the original?

The remix of Alexander Technique feat Princess Superstar was such a great remix to do because I love the rap. Miss Superstar really knows how to rock the mic.

I got the parts sent from another rapper I know called Qboy. He knows Alexander and thought I could do a cool mix of the track. I did the mix and he forwarded it to Alexander who really liked it. It seems to have got some great feedback so I’m really happy, and I would love to do some more tracks for his label "Djs are not rock stars"

Tell us about 'Take my Soul', a song that was short listed for a Nike's new global ad campaign. Did this track get an original release or was it Just for Nike at the time?

"Take my Soul" was a track I did a few moths ago, I went to this after party at my friends house, and thought I’d play it to my friends to see the reaction.

The whole flat went crazy and one of the guys there was just pitching music for Nike and thought it would be great for their advert. There were originally 50 short-listed tracks that where cut down to a final three. One of them was my "Take my soul".

I was so nervous and when I heard how much money they proposed for the chosen track, I almost fainted. In the end they went for a track from a guy in Japan I think. I was guttered, but I thought I’d forward the track to some labels to see the response, and two days later Roger Sanchez label Stealth offered me a deal with the track. It now looks like the track is coming out in August. It’ll be called "Ever Before" with a featured vocal from Max C, it's all very exiting.

What can you tell us about your remix with our wonderful (but dirty) friend DJ CAT NYC and her dirty musings of ‘Hot Pink P****’?

When I first heard the track I thought Wow!! It's completely up my street. I thought the parts where great and I knew exactly what to do with it. I think Dj Cat is a cool cat, I never met her, but she seems to be super nice. I think her voice is cool, because it's very characteristic and that is so important.

Now I see that legendary synth pop band Depeche Mode gave you the clearance to re-release a cover of their classic "Everything counts." I took the liberty of You tubing the video for the original, now I need to know from you what will be done in terms of rehashing this classic hit. Will it be remixed?

I have got the clearance from Depeche Mode to release a cover of "Everything Counts" with Warren Morris. I had djs listening to it saying how the hell are you gonna clear this sample. When I'm telling them it's re-sung they go what!!??

Warren has done such an amazing cover of it, I don't think many people can hear the difference to the original. The great thing was that Kosmo Records in Germany really wanted to release it, but they warned me that it could take a while to get it cleared with Depeche Mode’s publisher. After two weeks their publisher got back to us giving us the full permission to cover the track. My production behind it is very big room sounding with a big drop for the chorus. The release date is coming up very soon.

What is your favorite Depeche Mode song of all time….besides ‘Everything Counts?’

Personal Jesus is fantastic, but there's so many it's tricky to choose one.

A lot of your music has been released on some very prestigious dance labels such as Azuli, Stealth, Joia, and Whore House. What are you going to be doing in regards with Kinetika Music in NYC?

With Kinetika it's gonna be something really cool and different, George has been really supportive, and at this stage I can't tell you what the project will be like, but I think you gonna be surprised.

How are you coping with the day to day changes in the music industry? Do you long for the days of releasing everything on CD and Vinyl, or are you okay with distributing music digitally as it is more convenient for people to get access to your music?

I'm quite happy with the digital distribution, but a lot of cool music get lost in the hundreds and thousands of tracks that get released a week. It was great when you could go down to the record store and ask what was new this week and you got 50 records where you maybe picked 5 you liked. Now you pick 50 tracks and you end up with so much music, and not knowing what the fuck they sound like.

I think there is a lot of new talent in dance music that gets discovered, and a lot of labels and artist don’t know how to survive the digital revolution.

What is your take on the quality of dance music today? Do you think its good, marginal, needs works, or are we at its peak?

I think there is a lot of amazing stuff coming out, and I think it's easier to produce today with just a laptop, but you still need the experience as a producer to know how to make something sounding really good, even if you have the most recent sample cd and plug-ins.

Back in the 90's you needed to have connections with labels and a decent track to get signed, while today you really need to be a good producer with good contacts of course.

Djs……more or less?

More djs and more producing djs, it's a dj boom at the moment everyone's a dj.

Celebrity djs, drag queen djs and djs. I think the celebrity dj thing is awful and really cheap, and often a real disaster, let proper djs play, soup stars should not be behind the decks keep them in the toilet snorting coke where they belong.

Now let’s get to GutterSlut, a party that you promote. From your take of GutterSlut, would you give us a brief rundown of how GutterSlut came to fruition?

I was djing a lot on the gay scene in London and all over the world, with resident sets for Heaven, Salvation and a club called Fire. When I started, the scene in London was really cool, but after years it started to fade. The drugs got heavier and the music got really cheezy, so I thought it was time to move on and I started GutterSlut with my friends and my boyfriend.

We where all sick of the scene, because it was always the same music. Euro house without no exception so we though let's do a fucking crazy night for people who are sick of hearing cheap mixes of Britney Spears on a Saturday night.

Our amazing friend and performance artist extraordinaire Jonny Woo took the role as our GutterSlut muse.

The party is a mash up, music wise and crowd wise. We have a mix of gays, straights, naked people, trannies you name - turning up to the club, and that's what has made GutterSlut unique to London’s club scene. The music we play on our main floor is a mix starting off with Nu-disco moving on to indie dance and electro and finishing off with ravey techno or as we say it "Ghetto Elektro Facelifting Rave and Diet Techno.

Our MC Miss Crytsal Mc is also making the party go off with hear deep sexy vocals over the music. We also have a smaller disco room downstairs in the club where Ralf O and Guests play trashy 80's and disco sounds. We found the perfect venue for GutterSlut as well, an old strip bar on 483 Hackney rd.

What would a typical GutterSlut night entail?

Half naked transexuals pole dancing the night away. Something breaking down at the end of the night and me on the megaphone going crazy.

Can you dish to us one instance of the most outrageous GutterSlut party moment that has happen? It didn’t end in blood did it?

I think we have had a few. A month ago we had a tranny with wings dancin' on a podium completely trashed who waves her wings so intense that a glass of beer flew down onto the mixer in the dj booth and killed the whole sounds-system and the lighting as well. The club was pitch black and it took us 10 mins to clean out the beer out of the mixer.

We also have had people having sex downstairs in the disco slut room and there's always a man who turns up naked with just a cock ring as clothing, He's very friendly and never trouble though we need to tell him to calm down sometime because his cock is massive when it's hard.

What’s on the cards for you this year and I guess maybe the next? Will you be touring, more GutterSlut parties..etc?

Yes it's all looking really good. I will have three new releases coming out. "Everything Counts" on Kosmo Records and two new ones that Roger Sanchez has picked up for his Stealth records imprint. First Single is "Old School Nu School" out at the end of the summer and "Ever Before" (Nike Ad) out early autumn.

Dj sets in Copenhagen, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Stockholm. Gutterslut are doing a party in Sicily and I have been invited to do something in Paris as well. There are requests from bigger clubs in London, and in a few weeks (4th of July) we are doing a party with Jodie Harsh and Circus at Matter (O2 Arena) with VV Brown, Kissy Sellout, Frank Music, Tom Stephan etc. So this summer/ winter.

I'm sooooo exited about!!

Lastly any wise words to end our interview Per?

I stopped drinking 10 weeks ago and realised that I'm even crazier without alcohol. Play hard, work hard and party hard but don't forget to detox, a smootie a day is what doctor Per Qx would say.

Major Lazer-Guns don’t kill people, lazers do

By Conan the Destroyhhher

From what I know about the two artists behind this project (Switch and Diplo), they took a huge risk from their dance music counterparts to give Dub and Reggae a white wash of niceness with their polished production chops, witty toasting from the collaborators which does make it a huge departure from what we know Diplo and Switch for.

This is of course a review of Major Lazer’s debut album ‘Gun’s don’t kill people, lazers do.’ Now I had a hard time acquiring this album from my usual sources because of the fact the label was anal about giving out advance copies to media types like me. Plus there was a huge hype up about this release which was evident on Nerdy Frames.

So the question remains…..was it worth it? Was it worth the begging, screaming and constant pestering to the record company to get this album? Well I’m happy to say….yes it was worth it!

Combining the production talents of the two producers, as well as slowing the tempos down a notch to match the dub and reggae implemented with this fantastic album, no doubt this will surprise fans of Diplo and Switch.

Now I’m not familiar with any of Diplo’s music or any of his production, but this is a welcome to newcomers who need a good introduction into his music. Yeah I’m more inclined towards Switch because I’m more familiar with his music, but be warned Switch fans as there is little to no traces of Fidget House……….what a revelation!

‘I’ll make ya’ featuring Mr. Lex & Santigold starts firing off with brute force and dub strength with a spaghetti western/surf sample running through it. It’s funny that this track in the blog circles is called ‘Hold the line’ with nearly a dozen remixes of this particular track floating around cyber space. The original is certainly the better and a refreshing break from the plethora of remixes!

‘When You Hear the Bassline’ featuring Ms.Thing is a gunshot analogy of banging rhythms and lyrics from Ms.Thing with a lining a phat bass giving it a nice hum. Also beware of the auto-tune oozing out of some of the tracks in this album if you’re not into the whole T-Pain (esq) vocoder….speaking of which

‘Keep It Goin' Louder’ featuring Nina Sky is your obligatory R n’ B and Reggae infused track dangerously crossing over to pop territory but kept subtle. It sounds like a Sean Kingston track with Ricky Blaze sounding like Kingston and a bit of Akon in there.

‘Pon De Floor’ is an interesting track with a chipmunk synth line sounding like some fucked up horns with a rhythmic drum loop. Catching none the less!

‘Jump Up’ featuring Leftside & Supa Hype is just pure dancehall bliss that will have you hopping up n down like an idiot. It’s as if Kraftwerk and Peter Tosh were sharing a toke between the 2 while fighting over the only drum machine and Moog synth left on the planet

My only concern is that there is nothing groundbreaking with the ideas or concepts with Major Lazer. I’m sure if you heard one reggae/dub album, you may have heard a lot of what’s on this offering from many other albums.

However this will no doubt hinder the pure enjoyment of Major Lazer because there are some redeeming qualities about this album such as old and established ideas done from different perspectives. It doesn’t feel contrived, forced or annoying, its just pure dancehall fun without you thinking so much.

It’s a good album and the hype surrounding it was sure warranted! Grab a copy today!

fabric Press Direct: DJ MARKY & FRIENDS at FABRICLIVE FRIDAY 17 JULY 2009

DJ MARKY & FRIENDS at FABRICLIVE
FRIDAY 17 JULY 2009

After April’s arresting and electric performance (even scratch routines that included sitting on the decks at one point), Brazilian hero DJ Marky returns for his second Marky & Friends takeover – this time bringing along with him a kaleidoscopic crew of all shapes and sounds.

ROOM ONE:
MARKY & FRIENDS...
DJ Marky, Black Milk (LIVE), Fabio, Spin Doctor, Simbad
MCs Stamina MC & GQ

With the emphasis of his new FABRICLIVE residency being on live performances, DJ Marky has roped in one of the livest names in hip hop at the moment, Detroit’s deeply captivating and magnetic rapper/producer Black Milk. After his third solo album, ‘Tronic,’ blew through the ’08 charts, bringing a sound that encapsulates the Motor City’s hard knocks and bumps, Milk gave immaculate evidence of why he’s one of the most sought-after beatmakers in the game. As a producer, Black Milk is simply untouchable, giving hip hop a divine introduction to strange electronics: masterfully crafted drums and off-kilter beats get wrapped with swirling melodies, dense textures and psychedelic riffs. Black Milk’s unconventional sound and attitude will align harmoniously with Marky’s rebellious flair; a pairing of two unexpectedly kindred minds. With Black Milk comes Spin Doctor, whose Doctor’s Orders nights have given London a hard-to-follow blueprint for hip hop nights. Also in the house is the incomparable Fabio, bringing his signature dose of deep soul and funk-led drum & bass. And Simbad’s endlessly deep record crates will fill the floor with booty-popping bangers - from Afrobeat to dancehall to reggae to some of the most otherworldly beats imaginable. A purveyor of variety and surprise, Simbad is the perfect fit for sliding in-between the twists and turns of Marky’s speckled lineup.

ROOM TWO:
Pinch, Peverelist, Bass Clef (LIVE), Headhunter, Komonazmuk, Synkro B2B Indigo
MCs Rider Shafique, Joe Peng

In Room Two, the focus is on the Bristol dancefloor; the line up heavily showcasing the signature sounds of the vibrant scene currently splurting out of the city’s every pore. Pinch, is one of dubstep’s Bristol lynchpins, giving the city its own answer to London’s bass music focused dubstep nights, FWD>> and DMZ, with his midweek jam, Subloaded. Also the leader of the mighty Tectonic label - an imprint behind some of dubstep's most radical sounds - Pinch is an effortless master behind the boards as well as on the decks, creating genre-fusing productions that prowl and drive with a dancefloor lean and a bass-heavy grip. Alongside Pinch comes the fluid sound of fellow Bristolian Peverelist who, since 2006, has been changing the face of the game with his breakthrough label, Punch Drunk Records. Carving a unique path with his own productions, there's nothing quite like the sound of a Peverelist anthem (case in point: ‘Clunk Clip Every Trip’), his delicate and hypnotic melodies lull the listener into a state of meditative bliss – just before his devastating bass drops hit with the full force of a carefully stacked and tweaked rig. Though Bristol’s techno lineage has been heavily stamped into the history books with Appleblim’s involvement in the Skull Disco label, and productions by the aforementioned artists and labels, it was the H.E.N.C.H. collective affiliate Headhunter who really stretched dubtechno to wide crossover appeal with his debut album ‘Nomad’ on Tempa last year; even pairing himself up a remix with techno architect Martin Buttrich. Komonazmuk furthers the H.E.N.C.H. label stronghold on Room Two with his ground-shaking golden fusion of styles. And last, but by no means least, solely repping the Northern scene comes the lush pairing of Manchester’s Synkro and Indigo, who propel elements of melodic 2-step, techno and inexplicable hooks into their deep, engulfing productions. Joe Peng and the smooth sounds of Rider Shafique, one half of Black Canvas (whose landmark ‘Rise’ album was released on Cool & Deadly on 22 June), will be on mic duties throughout the dub-laced night.

ROOM THREE:
AUTONOMIC...
D-Bridge, Instra:mental, Actress (LIVE),
MC SP:MC

Autonomic is currently drum & bass’ answer to the many rhetorical questions asked by the scene’s locked-in hierarchy and sluggish immobility. What started off as a podcast series has launched into a global movement of sorts, a reawakening for those junglists around the interweb whose interest has faded and waned. From podcasts to club nights to whatever their bright future may hold, Autonomic is an eye-opening and inspired collaboration between the ever-challenging D-Bridge, a rebel in the face of an often judgmental scene, and the deeply-rooted musicality of the Instra:mental duo, collectively Alex Green and Damon Kirkhamduo. It’s a celebration of music and influences, with no lines drawn or genres considered; a warm and emotive embrace of all things deep, lush and intricate. As D&B is often regarded as a scene that’s fighting progression, Autonomic is verification that the genre is as alive, experimental and future-forward as ever, with absolutely no signs of slowing. The Autonomic podcasts are both a sweeping escape and a startling discovery; uncovering hidden gems of the scene, wonderfully colourful and incandescent productions that have been tucked away from anyone on the outside.

As we near Autonomic’s first invasion at FABRICLIVE – equipped with the vanguard Werk Discs’ boss Actress (mastermind behind ‘08’s ethereal and esoteric ‘Hazyville’ LP) and a special guest (to be announced soon) – we had a chat with D-Bridge to find out more.

How did Autonomic come about?
It came about through us wanting to give people a chance to hear what we were making and what we we’re into. We had so much good music around us, it was almost an impatient desire to get our music out to people; it was a direction we were going in musically and the advent of podcasting gave us the opportunity to get that across.

What’s your goal with the podcasts – what do you hope to achieve with them artistically?
Our roots may lie in drum & bass but we are heavily influenced by other scenes and wanted to hopefully reach out to those scenes and show that we aren't so different. We think D&B has had a stigma attached to it over recent years, whereby it's viewed as music for a younger crowd; we suppose we just wanted to let people know that we're here.

How do you go about deciding the theme of each podcast?
We tend to start with the influences; it seems to have turned into a personal battle between us. The theme just has to be honest upfront music built with feeling.

Can you tell us a bit about the podcasts you’ve created so far?
The podcast are compiled and produced in a way that you can keep going back to them, like an album or compilation. We've been pleasantly surprised at the response we've been getting from them, which solidifies our belief that there was a need for something new in D&B.

What can we expect from Autonomic at FABRICLIVE?
Expect a selection of good electronic music that we are all personally into, a mixture of upfront Autonomic sounds from ourselves and other producers and DJs that have made a mark on us.

What plans do you have for Autonomic for the future?
We will be continuing with the Club nights, as well as forthcoming Autonomic CD featuring exclusives from us, and artists involved with the Autonomic sound. Podcasts will continue until Layer:12 and in the new year we will be doing something slightly different with the podcasts.

fabric Press Direct: FABRICLIVE 47: TODDLA T

‘‘FABRICLIVE 47: TODDLA T’’
UK/R.O.W. Retail: 17th August 2009
USA: 8th September 2009

“Are you ready?” is a common question you’ll be asked by 24 year old Sheffield wunderkind Toddla T, and it’s a good question to ask yourself before listening to his FABRICLIVE 47 mix. In amongst his wide vocabulary of homegrown slang and off-the-wall catchphrases, Toddla T (known to his mum as Tom Bell) is a bright embodiment of boundless enthusiasm, unmatched charisma and a musical personality unlikely to be found anywhere else on the planet. His otherworldly taste in beats is often hard to keep up with as he shuffles effortlessly through genres and styles at a reckless pace, guided by an energy that, if bottled, could power the very same soundsystems that rattle with his electro dancehall and bashment-flavoured sets around the globe. It’s difficult to picture the lanky, wild-haired, motor-mouthed lad even getting exposed to said soundclash-geared sounds, and that very well could be the key to his success and explosive prominence. From the release of his much vaunted ‘Ghettoblaster’ mixtape to the quick-fire releases of his debut artist album ‘Skanky Skanky’ and now this official debut mix album, it has been a rollercoaster two years.

First picking up a set of turntables aged 12 (hence the Toddla moniker) after a cousin got him hooked on hip hop, it all began four years later when he discovered the skankier sounds of Sheffield: dancehall, ragga, grime and techno. “I grew up in an area that was mixed; I went to a mixed school and was really encouraged to get stuck into all kinds of cultures and people. It’s the only way I’ve known. If it was any different, it would be a bit weird. I was encouraged to get stuck into everything and it paid off now with the music. Seeing music as being one thing rather than little pockets of things, it’s all just one thing to me really.” – Toddla T

This inclusive attitude, which epitomizes British music in 2009, has driven his DJing since day one, and it’s the fuel for his creative fire. And it’s contagious. In fact, it’s the reason why, aged 18, he was picked up as a studio engineer at the Kenwood Studios in Sheffield where Dizzee Rascal had made ‘Boy In Da Corner’, working with the likes of Cash Money and Roots Manuva, with no previous experience to speak of. “The only reason I got into the engineering side was because it was the only way; I didn’t know anyone who made music so the only way to do it was learn myself. I spent a few years doing that and it was amazing, I met some wicked people and I learnt how to be in studio environments with everyone from local bands to pop stars.”

Toddla’s first taste of being an artist in his own right came with his original production setup, Small Arms Fiya; a collaboration with fellow producer Scott Moncrieff which yielded several releases and remixes. But it was the combination of releasing his ‘Ghettoblaster’ mixtape and working solo on production that firmly put him on the map. “I wanted to put the mixtape out because I wanted to represent what I was about - not just a couple of rhythm tracks. And then it just went berserk, it got out of hand really! Then I got signed to an album off the back of it, which was just incredible.”

This signing, to 1965 Records – a Sony subsidiary – led to the release of his debut album, ‘Skanky Skanky’, in May of this year. In the couple of years leading to the album, he had carved a name for himself as a producer and remixer of massive repute. From his show stealing production on Roots Manuva’s ‘Buff Nuff’ and ‘Do Nah Bodda Mi’ to the unbridled personality injections in his remixes of the likes of Hot Chip, Tricky and Esser – he repeatedly proved his ability to sculpt tracks that buzz with the crackling energy of dancehall and gut-wrenching low-end.

As for what the young artist is currently working on production-wise, the list is virtually endless. But it’s best put in his own words (which may require a translator) – for, as seen on his cult-worshipped Toddla TV youtube series, there’s no such thing as a conversation with Toddla T; it’s all a whirlwind of character, liveliness and whim.“I've been doing some production, I did 2 tracks for Bashy’s album, 'Catch Me If You Can,’ one of which was lead single - 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.’ I’ve done a track for Tinchy Stryder’s album, which he absolutely murked. Been in with Roisin Murphy working on her record. I’m goin’ to Jamaica in a couple of months for a coupla days in the studio...READY. Also about to go in with Trojan Soundsystem. Started my monthly Radio 1 show, every third Friday of the month, 2-4am....Steel City sonix nation wiiide!!!”

In comes the Steel City via FABRICLIVE 47, a living, breathing summation of all that is exciting about club music today, and for years to come. Veering from genre to genre, never missing a beat, Toddla – aided by the vocals of long term sparring partner MC Serocee – scorches through a searing seventy minute mix that lurches from the familiar electro dancehall of Cavemen’s remix of Duffy and Toddla’s own ‘Fill Up Mi Portion;’ to the Bristol jump-up drum & wobble of the Clipz/Toddla collabo; to the funky of Geeneus and Lil Silva; to dubstep from Untold and Caspa, with plenty of bends and tangents in between. Laced with VIPs, edits, medleys and exclusives throughout, this mix is the sound of one of the world’s most boxfresh artists, standing absolutely on top of the game. “I really wanted to represent an average DJ set in fabric from Toddla T & Serocee, Sheffield sonic stylee – as if a sweaty Sheffield basement was deported to Farringdon for the night! I’ve got exclusives and unreleased stuff from Roots Manuva, Skream, Drums Of Death, Untold, Shake Alleti, Toddla T (obviously), Martelo, Oris Jay, Oneman & Mr Versatile, as well as a few cheeky blends that have never been done before! So hopefully a lot of stuff will be brand new to people’s ears. This is fierce club kinda fodder!” – Toddla T
